This workshop is based on the Rural Women Online Safety Toolkit.
The motto is:
Be Smart, Be
Safe, But Don't be Left Behind! Protect Your Privacy and Safely
Online
- Learn the basics that are essential for using the Internet
safely.
- Learn to always protect your privacy and safety when
interacting on web sites, opening email, using chat or messenger, and using
social networking sites.
- Learn what you may not realize is behind the scenes
on the Internet, and why you need to be aware and protect your privacy.
- Learn what software tools help you to be safe and
which ones have a longer history of protecting web users. (Anti-Virus,
Anti-Spyware, Firewalls)
- Learn how to configure your browser and your
email for safer use.
- Learn what Phishing, Web Bugs, Clear Gifs, Beacons,
Keylogging, Cookies, and Datatbases are all about. Understand why you need to be
careful.
- Learn how to delete the history, cache, and location
bar information from your browser, and temp and internet files from your home
computer. Essential if you are in an abusive relationship. Learn about
software on your computer that may be tracking you, keylogging. Learn what
software can help you clean up files you've deleted.
- Learn that you do have privacy rights and that you
should value and use them.
Agenda:
- 7:00 - 7:45 : Presentation of information from the
Online Safety Toolkit.
- 7:45 - 8:30 : After
the presentation, a moderated discussion
- of individual experiences people have experienced,
- questions and answers. (Questions that can't be
answered during the workshop can be posted to the web site when an answer is
found.)
